HOBART: Champion jockey Harry White again proved he is Australia's best distance rider with a dashing display to win yesterday's $102,500 Benson And Hedges Hobart Cup, 2,380m, at Elwick.
White, who won the Hobart Cup in 1970 on Dark Purple, rode 7-4 favourite Brisque to a 1 1/2-length victory over Lloyd's Nijinsky (33-1), with Big Band(11-4) running on well for third.
White was sent out with instructions to ride the race he rode on Affected in last year's Hobart Cup. Affected finished fourth after failing to run out the trip and connections were extremely confident Brisque would win yesterday
Richard Freedman, standing in for Brisque's Flemington trainer, his brother Lee, said he would like to give the Full On Aces horse an opportunity at stud in Tasmania when he finished his racing career.
Brisque is a three-quarter brother to leading Tasmanian two-year-old-sire Magic King.
Brisque had proved difficult to train until Freedman put him over jumps. "He was a maiden galloper until we jumped him in a bid to keep his mind on racing," Richard Freedman said.
Brisbane jockey Neil Williams replaced Brent Thomson on Big Band after Thomson twisted his ankle in a fall earlier in the day.
Thomson will see his Melbourne specialist this morning in a bid to ride at Sandown on Saturday, where he has been booked for the Tom Smith pair Lygon Arms (Autumn Stakes) and Record Dash (Blue Diamond Prelude, colts and geldings division), and Jack Denham's Startling Lass (fillies' Prelude).
