High Winds No Match For High Spirits

HOBART: Gusty winds played havoc with acoustics but didn't buffet the spirits of the faithful at yesterday's Papal Mass.

The Mass, against a magnificent backdrop of the Derwent River and Mt Wellington, was attended by about 20,000 people at Elwick Park racecourse.

This was rather less than the 27,000 tickets given away.

The Pope arrived at the racecourse with Archbishop Guilford Young of Hobart- Australia's senior bishop by consecration who was made a bishop in 1948 at the age of 32. He was at that time the world's youngest Roman Catholic bishop

The Bishop of Wagga, the Most Rev William Brennan, joined the Pope and Archbishop Young in celebrating the Mass.

In his sermon, the Pope referred to Tasmania's convict origins and to the fact that the first Australian-born priest, nun and religious brother all came from Tasmania.

The Pope used their example to speak about the biblical meaning of discipleship.
